• Before making a reservation at any airline, it is recommended that you educate yourself regarding ticket cancellation and changes policy. It's better to know in advance how much a ticket change or cancellation will cost you, in case you change your mind or in case of an unexpected event in your life. It takes a bit of your time, but it can save you money. Cancellation and changes policies depend on many factors (like: cancellation date, ticket class, destination, if the ticket was paid for, or purchased with award miles, and so on). Keep in mind that most low fare tickets are usually nonrefundable.
  • But, even the nonrefundable tickets have a 24-hour cancellation window. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires "each U.S. and foreign air carrier that has a website marketed to U.S. consumers" to allow customers to cancel their reservations within 24 hours without a fee or to hold a reservation for 24 hours without payment, if the reservation is made seven days or more prior to the flight scheduled departure time. You are entitled to a refund in the original form of payment.
  • Book directly with the airline, as much as possible. The DOT "24-hrs rule" applies to carriers only, not travel agencies or 3rd party vendors.  Some travel agencies follow the 24-hrs rule for some of their bookings, but if you use a travel agency make sure you check their cancellation policy before you book.
  • Also, a nonrefundable ticket can be fully refunded if the airline makes significant changes in the flight schedule, the flight has a significant delay or the flight is cancelled altogether
  • Some airlines, (for example United), will refund tickets or change fees in case of special circumstances, (like: death of an immediate family member, jury duty and certain illnesses), if such an event will prevent you to use your ticket. Of course, they require proper documentation.
  • Same-day changes allows you to change your domestic flight on most airlines for a fee that is usually lower than regular flight changes fees (or for example, at Southwest, flight changes are free). Same-day changes are allowed within 24 hours before your original flight, or in some cases after midnight on the day of your actual trip; and the requested flight must depart within 24 hours from the time the request is made. You still have to pay any fare difference.
  •  Award miles tickets have a different set of rules, specific to each airline.
  • Note: the following information related to cancellations and changes fees might not be up to date. Even though we try our best to keep information current it is best for you to check with the airline for their latest updates.
